Grip seal bags in plain, write on panel and heavy duty

Grip seal bags — also called resealable bags, poly grip bags, zip lock bags or self seal plastic bags — are clear polythene bags with a press-to-close seal along the shorter, open side. Push the seal shut with your fingers and the bag closes tight; pull it apart and it opens again, as many times as you need. They are the cheapest reliable way to bag small parts, spares, samples, jewellery, craft kits and paperwork.

Which range do you need?

• Plain grip seal bags — the standard clear bag in 160 gauge (40 micron) and 180 gauge (45 micron). Nineteen sizes, the widest choice and the lowest cost per bag.
• Write on panel grip seal bags — the same bag with three printed white panels so you can label contents, part numbers or batch codes in biro or marker. Fifteen sizes.
• Heavy duty grip seal bags — 300 gauge (75 micron) film, close to twice the thickness, for screws, fixings, sharp castings and heavier components. Seven sizes.

How to choose a gauge and size

Gauge and micron both describe film thickness — the higher the number, the tougher the bag. 160-180 gauge is right for paperwork, beads, buttons, cards and light plastic parts. Step up to 300 gauge as soon as the contents have edges or weight, or if the bag will be handled repeatedly.

All sizes are given as width (the opening) x depth in inches. Measure the widest point of what you are bagging and add roughly 10mm so the item clears the grip seal. If several small parts are going in together, take the next size up so the seal is not under tension.
