Compostable Mailing Bags: The Honest 2026 Buyer's Guide

"Compostable" is one of the most over-used and under-understood words in packaging. So before you switch your entire dispatch line, here's what we've learned from the customers who've done it well — and the ones who've had to switch back.
Compostable vs. biodegradable vs. recyclable
Compostable means the material breaks down into non-toxic biomass, water and CO₂ within a defined timeframe — typically 6 months in industrial composting, 12 months in home composting. Biodegradable just means it breaks down eventually (which technically applies to most things). Recyclable means it can be reprocessed into new material — but only if it actually reaches the right stream.
Our compostable mailing bags meet EN 13432 — the European standard for industrially compostable packaging — and our compostable cellophane range is certified home compostable.
How they actually perform
This is where customers get nervous. The honest truth: modern compostable mailers are now indistinguishable from standard polythene in normal use. They have the same tear strength, the same self-seal adhesive performance, and the same look-and-feel for your customer.
The two real differences:
- Shelf life — compostables have a 12-month usable life from manufacture. Don't bulk-buy a 3-year supply.
- Print finish — slightly more matte than polythene. Many brands actually prefer this.
What it costs
Roughly 15–25% more than equivalent polythene at the same volume. For a brand making sustainability central to its identity, that's a rounding error. For pure-cost operators, it's a meaningful uplift.
Which products in the range to consider
- Standard compostable mailing bags — the everyday workhorse.
- Compostable bubble mailers — for fragile items needing protection.
- Compostable cellophane bags — for retail, food and gifting display.
- Compostable carrier bags — for in-store handover.
Communicate it on the bag
The most successful switchers don't hide it — they print "Home Compostable" or "Industrially Compostable — please dispose with food waste" directly onto the bag. This avoids the worst outcome: a compostable mailer ending up in landfill because the recipient assumed it was plastic.
The verdict
If your customers care about sustainability — and increasingly they do — compostable mailers are now a genuinely viable option without the historic compromises. Start with a single SKU, run it for a quarter, then expand from there.
