What is a compostable mailing bag?

A compostable mailing bag is a postal bag manufactured from renewable plant material that breaks down into water, CO2 and biomass in a composting environment — leaving zero plastic residue behind. Unlike conventional plastic, a true compostable mailer is independently certified (we use the EN13432 European standard, the same standard used for compostable food packaging).

Biodegradable mailing bags vs compostable mailers

The terms "biodegradable mailing bags" and "biodegradable postage bags" are often used interchangeably with compostable — but there's an important difference. All compostable bags are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable bags are compostable. Our range is both: they biodegrade and they are certified to fully compost into soil-safe material, which is the gold standard for eco-friendly mailing bags.

Reusable mailing bags — the double glue line

Every bag in this range has a double peel-and-seal glue strip. The first strip seals the original outbound parcel; the second sits below the tear-off line so the recipient can reseal the bag and use it again — for a return shipment, to send a parcel of their own, or to pass on. Reuse always beats single-use, even for compostable packaging, because keeping the bag in circulation extends its working life before it eventually returns to the soil. The double glue line is one of the most-requested features from our ecommerce customers and a simple way to give your unboxing a "use me again" message printed on the inside.

Compostable vs degradable mailing bags — which do you need?

Home composting vs industrial composting

Our bags meet EN13432 — they break down in industrial composting facilities (controlled at 55–60°C) within roughly 12 weeks. In a home compost heap the process is slower (6–12 months) but they will still break down where moisture, heat and microbial activity are present. We recommend telling your customers which route to take with a short message on your packing insert.
