Christmas Packaging: A Buying Calendar for UK Retailers

Christmas Packaging: A Buying Calendar for UK Retailers — Packaging Panda blog post

Every November, hat boxes sell out. Every November, customers are surprised. Don't be one of them — here's our recommended buying calendar.

August: lock in the big-ticket items

This is when you order wholesale hat boxes in gold and silver. By October the popular sizes are gone, and by November you're paying premium pricing for what's left.

September: secure your gift box stack

Order your gift boxes and presentation packaging. Volume pricing is still good and supply is healthy.

    October: outers, mailers and protection

Order extra cardboard boxes, mailing bags and protective packaging for the December dispatch surge. Most operators underestimate December volumes by 30–50% based on November numbers.

    November: top-ups and consumables

Tape, void fill and labels. These rarely sell out but you don't want to be ordering on the 20th of December.

    December: emergency only

Anything you order in December will arrive too late to be useful. The only exception is cardboard tubes for last-minute calendar and print orders, which our suppliers tend to keep healthy stock of.

    The single biggest mistake

Buying based on last year's sales. Most UK retailers grew their festive volumes year-on-year through 2023–2025. Build in 20% headroom on every line.
